Experts hypothesize that a new mass extinction is underway with 75% of vertebrate species expected to be wiped out within two generations. The reasons for this extinction boil down to human behavior and its harsh effect on the planet’s ecosystems. With these alarming threats and challenges upon mankind, we need to make an effort towards conservation and sustainability of Earth’s resources and species rather than accelerate the destruction of our fragile environment.
Given this information, it’s no surprise that there has been an vocal uproar about the recent slaughtering of Cecil the lion for nothing more than a trophy on someone’s mantlepiece. Humans already do enough environmental damage to animals’ livelihoods, and now people are realizing the further harm we cause by hunting these few remaining survivors for sport. While the African lion has not yet been added as an endangered species, Cecil’s death highlights the pressure his and other species are under when it comes to hunting and poaching.
The following is a tribute to Cecil’s magnificence and majesty. Let’s hope we can curb our behaviors so more generations can experience and appreciate the diversity of the great planet that Cecil represents!
