“Lolita” by Vladimir Nabokov

Published in 1955, “Lolita” is considered one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. With an extremely controversial plot line–a middle-aged literature professor becomes sexually involved and obsessed with his new 12-year-old stepdaughter–many publishers wouldn’t touch this book with a ten-foot pole! Nabokov received multiple rejection letters stating harsh criticism for his manuscript, one even saying, “I recommend that it be buried under a stone for a thousand years.” Today, it’s sold over 50 million copies worldwide, and has been published by all of the major publishing houses that initially rejected it.
