Zoe Saldana and her husband, Italian artist Marco Perego, are celebrating his new status as an official U.S. citizen. officially became a U.S. citizen.
The Avatar beauty wed Marco in a secret ceremony in England in the summer of 2013, and now, three years later, he has been sworn in as an American.
Zoe, who shares twin boys with her husband, took to Instagram on Wednesday to share the exciting news with fans as the couple was en route to the courthouse for an oath ceremony.
“Marco has been dreaming about this moment for a long time,” she wrote beside a photo of Marco, who was wearing a suit as he drove the car. “It was a process – as it should be, but we are finally here.”
The actress then shared a few words of encouragement for others seeking to gain U.S. citizenship, adding, “We are aware it isn’t as easy for many immigrants to obtain their citizenship, we say to them NEVER GIVE UP. Stay the course, America would not be what it is if not for the immigrants that come for better opportunities. We send love and good vibes to you all today.”
Zoe later posted another snap of Marco and her mother, who is pictured smiling widely as she waves a miniature American flag.
She explained, “My mom has been a citizen since she was a young girl. Her mother arrived in NYC in 1961 and brought my mother from Dominican Republic when she was 10. My sisters and I are indebted to them both. Because of them, we are American women. So proud she is here supporting Marco!”
Zoe then pointed out another familiar face in the background of her photo – British actor David Oyelowo, who was also celebrating a new milestone.
She quipped, “Oh, check out who is getting their naturalization today too… David Oyelowo and his wife! Congrats!”
Saldana and the Selma star aren’t the only celebrities who have met at a swearing-in ceremony – last August, 2015, Matthew McConaughey’s Brazilian-born wife Camila Alves became a U.S. citizen on the same day as British actress Emily Blunt, who was accompanied by her spouse, John Krasinski.
